- 2 cups warm water (110°F/45°C)
- 1/3
cup sugar - 1 ½ tablespoons active dry yeast
- ¼ cup (½ stick) butter, melted
- 1 ½ teaspoons salt
- 6 cups all-purpose or bread flour
- In a mixing bowl, combine the warm water and sugar, mixing until the sugar dissolves. Add the yeast and stir lightly. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes until the yeast becomes foamy.
- Mix in the melted butter and salt to the yeast mixture. Gradually add the flour, one cup at a time, and knead the dough until it's smooth and elastic.
- Roll the dough into a ball, place it in a greased bowl, and cover with a damp cloth. Allow it to rise for about 1 hour, or until it has doubled in size.
- Punch the risen dough down and knead for a few minutes. Divide the dough in half and shape each half into a loaf.
- Grease two 9x5 inch loaf pans and place the shaped loaves in them. Let them rise again for about 30 minutes, or until the dough extends about 1 inch above the top of the pans.
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake the loaves for 25-30 minutes, or until they are golden brown.
- Remove the loaves from the pans and let them cool completely on a cooling rack before slicing and enjoying.
